CUSTOMERS are crying out during the busiest shopping time of the year after Amazon dropped a popular payment method.

Venmo users can no longer pay through the prominent mobile application for purchases on the eCommerce site.

The digital payment service revealed the news in its Help Center section under Using Venmo on Amazon.

“Due to recent changes, Venmo can no longer be added as a payment method,” a note at the top of the page read.

“Venmo will remain available to users who currently have it enabled in their Amazon wallet until 01/10/24. ”

PayPal, who took control of Venmo in a 2013 deal, explained the situation further but wouldn’t reveal specifics, per Retail Dive.

“Venmo and Amazon have agreed to disable Venmo as an option to pay on Amazon at this time,” a spokesperson for the company told the publication.

“Customers can continue to add their Venmo debit card or credit card to their Amazon wallet to pay on Amazon.”

“We have a strong relationship with Amazon and look forward to continuing to build on it,” they added.

While it remains unclear what caused the change in a Venmo payment option on Amazon, shoppers voiced frustrations with its usability in several posts online.

‘INCONVENIENCE’

“I knew that was coming. Paying with Venmo on Amazon was a NIGHTMARE!” one person exclaimed on X, formerly Twitter.

“Venmo is garbage” another fumed.

A third added: “While Amazon dropping Venmo may inconvenience some users, it’s a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of digital payment options in e-commerce.”

Someone else wondered, “why?”

After the announcement, PayPal’s shares dropped by just over one percent after market close on Thursday, according to CNBC.

Venmo’s removal from Amazon is a complete 360 from its implementation as a payment method for shoppers in October 2022.

Amazon stressed to the outlet that there are still “nearly a dozen other payment methods” for shoppers.

PayPal also recently had a change in leadership, with longtime CEO Dan Schulman replaced with Alex Criss in August, Payments Dive reported.

Criss has seemingly been building new strategies for the company since then, and earlier this year, PayPal noted plans to grow Venmo’s popularity among teens.

PayPal Senior Vice President Doug Bland noted during a presentation in March that Venmo had around 58 million users.
